Mercedes M Class Review

One of the most popular mid-size sport utility vehicles today seems to be the Mercedes M Class, which has enjoyed sales and vehicle leasing success especially in the US. This W164 was redesigned in 2006, so most models available for car leasing these days sport the signature aerodynamic look. The coefficient of drag of the latest Mercedes M Class models is down to just 0.34. The newer Mercedes M Class vehicles are also noticeably larger than their predecessors. Some versions have chrome and steel detailing. Amber Rating – 4 Stars

Specs

The Mercedes M Class comes in seven options: The 2.3-litre I4 (with 150 hp, manual transmission only), the 2.7-litre L I5 (diesel), the 3.2-litre V6, the 3.7-litre V6, the 4.3-litre V8, the 5.0-litre V8, and the 5.4-litre V8. All versions are decidedly powerful compared to its rivals, and all of them come with standard equipment like cruise & climate control, parking sensors, powered tailgates, revolutionary “rain-sensing” wipers, and other extras such as Bluetooth connectivity. Performance

The lowest-powered versions (both diesels and petrol) are usually adequate for most drivers, and only a few power-crazy drivers stray on to the higher end of the spectrum. Fuel efficiency is of course very poor in older models, but new technology has cut the latest ML450 Hybrid’s consumption by 50% (compared to the ML550) without sacrificing power. Ride and Handling

Like all Mercedes-manufactured luxury SUVs, the Mercedes M Class remains composed even on the bumpiest road conditions, and only becomes jittery when used on extreme surfaces. It’s a fantastic motorway cruiser. Ride and handling is engaging overall, and steering is very responsive. That said, this line’s off-road abilities are not quite as good as the G-Wagen, but most Mercedes M Class buyers and contract hire clients do not use the car for off-roading, anyway. Amber Rating – 4 Stars

Refinement

The Mercedes M Class shares the same refined DNA as all other Benzes. You can expect an extremely quiet ride – there’s zero road noise, zero interference from headwinds on high motorway speeds, and the engines purr elegantly even when stretched to their limits. Amber Rating – 5 Stars

Safety & Security

Safety is a priority in the Mercedes M Class, so airbags – front, side, and curtain — come as standard along with pre-tensioning seatbelts, anti-whiplash head restraints, and an impressive range of high-technology stability and electronic braking aids. All models also have immobilisation and alarm systems to discourage theft. Amber Rating – 5 Stars

Ergonomics

The otherwise completely luxurious cabin is somewhat cheapened by hard plastic trim. However, this SUV does have superb ergonomics. There’s more than enough headroom and legroom for four adults and the low tunnel makes the ride comfortable for a centrally-seated rear passenger. The Mercedes M Class boot is very large and well-designed so that it’s easy to flip the bases of the rear seats forward and create a flat storage bay. The vehicle also comes with systems for securing smaller loads. Amber Rating – 5 Stars
